Tech Brokers & Special Modules
Human and Guardian Tech Broker unlocks, pre-engineered SCO FSD costs, the priority list, Powerplay modules, and other special module sources like Rescue Megaships and the Caspian Explorer.
Mostly evergreen. Unlock costs are stable. Thargoid item sources are volatile ⚠️.
Summary
- Tech Brokers trade rare modules for materials and commodities. There are two kinds: Human and Guardian.
- Two deal types. Regular items are a one time unlock. Pre-engineered items cost materials every time you buy one.
- The big three for most players: Guardian FSD Booster, a pre-engineered SCO drive, and Guardian Shield Reinforcement.
- Powerplay modules (like Prismatic Shields) come from ranking up with a Power. Every Power gives every module. The order differs.
- Other special sources: Rescue Megaships (AX gear), Operations (MercGear for Merc Coin), and the Caspian Explorer's Mk II modules.
How Tech Brokers Work
How to tell them apart: item names that start with "Engineered" are pre-engineered, pay per unit. So is anything that arrives already modded.
Human Tech Brokers sell human tech. Guardian Tech Brokers sell Guardian tech.
Stations in high population, high security systems. Use Inara Nearest, or filter the Galaxy Map by Technology Broker.
You must hand over every material and commodity in one go. No installments.
Pay once. The item is then buyable with credits forever, at any station with a broker of the same type.
Pay once, get one module placed in local storage. Want another? Pay again.
Most unlocks need ship materials (weightless) plus commodities (cargo). Bring cargo space.
Priority List
What is actually worth your time, in order.
| Rank | Item | Broker | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Guardian FSD Booster | Guardian | Flat jump range bonus on every ship. About +4 ly at size 1, about +10.5 ly at size 5. No human equivalent. |
| 2 | Pre-engineered SCO FSD | Human | Longest jump range in each size. Needs a Titan Drive Component per drive. |
| 3 | Guardian Shield Reinforcement | Guardian | Flat shield MJ boost. No human equivalent. |
| 4 | Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack | Human | Needed to safely carry Thargoid items, including Titan Drive Components |
| 5 | Prismatic Shields | Powerplay | Shield of one size bigger in a smaller slot. Heavy and slow to recharge. |
| 6 | Guardian Gauss Cannon | Guardian | The standout AX weapon. See Module 8. |
Most of the rest is niche, AX only, or just for fun.
The Two Drives
| Drive | Sizes | What It Has | Cost Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineered FSD (SCO) V1, a.k.a. "PESCO" | 2A to 7A | Increased Range and Faster Boot Sequence on one drive. Normally you can only have one blueprint. About 10% more range. | Pay per drive |
| Engineered FSD V1 | 5A only | Increased Range and Faster Boot on an old non-SCO drive | Pay per drive |
Pick the PESCO. SCO drives have a higher optimal mass, so a fully engineered SCO drive out-jumps the old V1. Add an experimental at any FSD engineer. Most guides say Mass Manager wins on SCO drives at every size. Elvira Martuuk at G1 is enough to apply it.
PESCO Costs by Size (from Inara)
Every size needs 1 Titan Drive Component (commodity) plus:
| Size | Datamined Wake Exceptions | Tellurium | Electrochemical Arrays | Chemical Processors | Propulsion Elements |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2A | 10 | 14 | 6 | 9 | 4 |
| 3A | 12 | 16 | 9 | 11 | 5 |
| 4A | 13 | 20 | 9 | 13 | 6 |
| 5A | 15 | 24 | 12 | 14 | 7 |
| 6A | 15 | 28 | 12 | 16 | 8 |
| 7A | 16 | 28 | 14 | 18 | 12 |
Engineered FSD V1 (5A): 18 Datamined Wake Exceptions, 26 Tellurium, 26 Electrochemical Arrays, 28 Chemical Processors. No Titan parts.
Getting the Thargoid Parts ⚠️
- Titan Drive Components drop at destroyed Thargoid Titan wreck sites. They are rare and random. One tested method: fly laps around the outer edge of the wreck field and scoop everything.
- They are corrosive. Carry them in a Corrosion Resistant Cargo Rack.
- Propulsion Elements drop at Titan wrecks too, and from destroyed Thargoid Scouts and Interceptors.
- While you are there, scoop Meta-Alloys and pop Thargoid sensors. Those feed Farseer, Palin, and Sedesi unlocks (Module 1).
- PESCO drives are not sold at megaship tech brokers, like Rescue Ships. Use a station.
- Full Titan wreck guide lives in Module 8.

Powerplay Modules
Pledge to any Power, earn merits, rank up. Every Power unlocks all 12 modules by rank 97. Each Power gives its own signature module first, at rank 34. Rank 34 = 247,000 merits. Rank 97 = 751,000 merits. Merits never decay in Powerplay 2.0. Leaving your Power resets them to zero.
| Module | What It Is | Community Verdict | Pledge Here to Get It First |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prismatic Shields | Shield as strong as one size up. Heavy, power hungry, slow recharge. | Most popular. Great for shield tanks, or strong shields in a small slot. | Aisling Duval |
| Pacifier Frag-Cannon | Longer range, tighter spread frag cannon (size 3 fixed) | Better than normal frags. PvP meta. | Jerome Archer |
| Imperial Hammer | Rail gun firing 3 slugs (size 2 fixed) | Sidegrade. Runs hot. | Arissa Lavigny-Duval |
| Advanced Plasma Accelerator | Plasma firing 3 shots (size 3 fixed) | Sidegrade | Denton Patreus |
| Containment Missile | Dumbfire that reboots the target's FSD | Pirate and PvP builds | Yuri Grom |
| Pack-Hound Missiles | Seekers firing 4 small missiles (size 2) | Fun. Low ammo, weak on armor. | Li Yong-Rui |
| Enforcer Cannon | Size 1 multi-cannon hitting like a size 3 | Good for small hardpoints on agile ships | Pranav Antal |
| Cytoscrambler | Size 1 burst laser hitting shields like a size 3 | Same idea, shields only. Short range. | Archon Delaine |
| Concord Cannon | Gimballed cannon firing 3 rounds (size 2) | Decent sidegrade | Nakato Kaine |
| Mining Lance | Size 1 beam for mining and combat | Weak at both | Zemina Torval |
| Pulse Disruptor | Pulse laser that disrupts the targeted module | Mostly useless | Felicia Winters |
| Retributor | Beam that heats the target | Weakest of the set | Edmund Mahon |
Tip: you do not have to pledge to Aisling for Prismatics. Ethos bonuses (+50% merits for your Power's preferred activities) can make another Power faster for your playstyle. Full Powerplay guide: Module 12. Bonus: every rank up pays a mini care package with 250,000 credits plus random ship and on-foot engineering materials.

Gotchas
- Bring everything in one trip. Brokers take no partial payments.
- Commodities take cargo space. Plan a ship with room.
- Unlocked items are only sold where a matching broker exists. Buy spares while you are there, or plan to transfer them.
- Pre-engineered modules cannot take new blueprints. You can only add an experimental effect.
- Guardian core modules cannot be engineered. That is why engineered human modules usually beat them.
- Only one Guardian FSD Booster fits per ship.
- Titan Drive Components are the bottleneck for PESCO drives. Budget time for the Titan wreck run.
Needs Checking ⚠️
